25 Things Wrong With Marvel Phase Two So Far

3. The Mandarin Debacle

This is one of those things that comic book fans could complain about forever €“ and they probably will.

The Mandarin is a classic comic book villain, with a history of stories that date back to 1964, and he's Iron Man's arch-nemesis (think Joker to Batman, Lex Luthor to Superman etc). He€™s Chinese, a descendant of Genghis Khan, a martial artist with almost otherworldly skills and he possesses ten rings, each of which grant him a different exotic superpower (including things like telepathy and control over metal).

However, in Iron Man 3, he was presented as nothing more than a bumbling British actor with an alcohol problem and then as Aldrich Killian, a man with Extremis powers and the head of A.I.M. Essentially, he was absolutely nothing like the comic book version and it caused uproar amongst fans.

The fan complaints were so vast that Marvel performed something of a U-turn and acknowledged that the real Mandarin is actually still out there in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The One-Shot movie "All Hail the King€ revealed that the real Mandarin was angry at Trevor Slattery €“ the aforementioned bumbling British actor €“ for portraying him in the way that he did (just like the fans, really).
