According to The Movies That Made Us, the original title of Ghostbusters was not the iconic name we know it as today, but rather a much less impactful and clunky sounding Ghostbreakers. As legend has it, the name Ghostbusters was already owned by Filmation and producers were worried that they would face a legal challenge if they went with Aykroyd’s desired title.

In the documentary, it was explained how director Ivan Reitman instructed the crew to film any scenes bearing the name Ghostbusters twice, just in case they didn’t get permission to use it. This same Filmation property would also be the reason why the animated series ended up being called The Real Ghostbusters, just to avoid any further confusion.

Eventually the whole mess would be cleared up when then CEO of Columbia Pictures Frank Price made a lateral move to Universal – the parent company of Filmation – and made sure there was no further opposition to anyone using the name.
