During the car chase, Moneypenny does some research and discovers that the Pale King is in fact Mr. White, the shadowy figure who appeared in both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Despite actor Jesper Christensen criticising the movies post-release, he was brought back for a brief cameo here, hiding out in Austria as Bond tracks him down to an isolated hut. The two get chatting and it turns out that Mr. White had been working for Oberhauser, but when Oberhauser began targeting women and children for his terrorist attacks, he grew a conscience. He has since been poisoned with the toxic compound Thallium by Oberhauser's men, giving him just a few weeks left to live. Bond then discovers that White is protecting someone, a daughter, Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux), and after some negotiation, bargains with White that he'll protect her if he can help him find Oberhauser. White gives Bond the location of his daughter, tells Bond she'll be able to lead him to "L'Americain", and then shoots himself in the head.
