One of the best-kept secrets of the film prior to release is that Judi Dench had actually filmed a small scene for it. When Moneypenny arrives at Bond's flat asking about his apparently reckless behaviour in Mexico City, he turns on the TV to reveal a DVD recorded by M. She tells Bond that in the event of her death, he needs to go after Sciarra, which of course completely flips his motives on their head and helps Moneypenny understand exactly what he's doing. The whole "speaking from beyond the grave" shtick is a pretty goofy trope and a lazy one to try and give the otherwise generic investigation more emotional depth, but on the other hand, Dench is so fantastic in the role that it's hard to be that mad about it.
