Though Alan Cumming was an exceptional Nightcrawler chosen in the end at least partly because he spoke fluent German it still feels like something of a missed opportunity that one of the other actors who auditioned for the role wasn't ultimately chosen. It's quite easy to imagine Neil Patrick Harris donning the blue makeup, and teleporting his way into the White House to assassinate the president. He certainly has the theatrical background to make it work. Unfortunately, despite being the best thing about X-Men United, the character would not make it to the final sequel, or to Days Of Future Past as the filmmakers initially deemed the character not worth the preparation for the pay-off. Maybe the character could pop up in X-Men: Apocalypse? It's possible. Maybe Harris could get another shot at the character? Yeah, that's less possible.
