Alicia Silverstones portrayal of Batgirl in Batman & Robin is hands down one of the worst efforts in all of comic book movie history. At the time it probably seemed like a genius move; her star was rising, and it added a heroic female character to the film. In retrospect, the filmmakers must have been clueless to include her in the proceedings. Looking back on it, it's clear that the filmmakers should have went with their first consideration, Christina Ricci. At the time the actress was known for playing morbid characters in dark films like The Addams Family and The Ice Storm. She also happens to be one of the most underrated actresses of her generation. So, at the end of the day this missed opportunity is a split down the middle. On one hand it's good (for her) that she didn't get the part. On the other hand it's not good (for us) that Silverstone did.
