2. Silver Bullet

Silver Bullet
Paramount Pictures

Another underrated werewolf entry rears its head...

That subgenre has more misses than hits compared to its vampiric and zombified brethren, so it's a pity that the effective Silver Bullet got unfairly lost in the flood of Stephen King adaptations in the 1980s. In retrospect, it stands out from the pack, playing like a mash-up of Rear Window and The Wolf Man, with a heap of heart.

The story follows Corey Haim’s young paraplegic, stuck at home and suspecting that a werewolf is behind a string of murders in his small American town. Of course, no one believes him except for his sister Jane (Megan Follows) and his off-kilter Uncle Red (Gary Busey). Together, they set out to investigate and solve the mystery before the next full moon, when the killer is bound to strike again.

Made during a period when Haim was at the peak of kid actors, he doesn’t disappoint, delivering a likeable young hero in over his head. Busey, as always, steals the show, but beneath all his eccentricity, he provides an unexpectedly endearing center point. And let’s not forget Everett McGill, always reliable in genre films, here playing a vulnerable preacher hiding a dark secret.

While the werewolf suit is hit-and-miss, it’s still an effectively practical creation, and Silver Bullet is directed with enough style and visual flair to smooth over its weaker spots. What emerges is an overlooked gem that blends King’s knack for whimsical youth storytelling with cold scares and a surprisingly gripping murder mystery at its core.
