30 Essential Movies To Watch Before Turning 30

5. Reality Bites (1994)

Synopsis: Winona Ryder and her college roommates are trying to deal with life after graduation and make a documentary detailing the experience. Ryder meets Ben Stiller, a film producer, who wants to air her documentary. She then finds herself pinned between the success she could have with Stiller and the brooding, heartfelt love she could have with roommate, Ethan Hawke. Lesson: Sometimes life gets hard. It's just that simple. You're not always going to know what the next step is. This is when your creativity can come in handy. Between jobs? Do something creative. It might end up helping you solidify your next move rather than waste time until your next move comes to you.

4. Romy And Michele's High School Reunion (1997)

Synopsis: Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow play high school besties who are preparing for their high school reunion. While reminiscing, the two decide to reinvent their lives up to that point in an attempt to win the respect of the notorious "A Group", the girls who gave them a hard time in high school. Lesson: You can't change who you are overnight. You have to be proud of who you are and where you come from. The opinion others have of you depend solely on the confidence you show them. If you see yourself as lesser than others, they will treat you accordingly. Have self-respect and a willingness to see people for who they are, not what they say or do.

3. St. Elmo's Fire (1985)

Synopsis: Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, et. al. have been best friends since high school. Now, having graduated college, they watch each other succumb to the hardships in life and realize that there is nothing keeping them together except for their pasts. Struggling with adulthood and coming to terms with who they have become, the group finds their relationships have altered drastically as their dreams for themselves have become clearer. Lessons: Don't ever be afraid to speak your mind to a friend who is going off the deep end. If they abuse your friendship, close that bridge. Shut it down. Burn it or don't burn it, it's your choice, but just know that some bridges can transport unwelcome cargo. Some of the older bridges that aren't taken care of only need one lightening strike to burn on their own.
