30 Greatest Best Picture Oscar Nominees Of The Last Ten Years

11. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Birdman Michael Keaton
Fox Searchlight

Three Billboards was misleadingly marketed. From the trailers it appeared to be a black comedy similar to Martin McDonagh's fantastically brilliant debut In Bruges and there are indeed funny moments, but such laughs are few and far in between.

In fact, Three Billboards is an achingly emotional and seriously affecting look at grief, anger, justice and redemption that makes for a very tough yet exceptionally rewarding viewing experience.

Yes, the very end is disappointing, anticlimactic and kind of goes against the themes of the rest of the film, but the rest is almost perfect, so all is forgiven.

Like of the few of the other films on this list, it's among the best-written films of the last few years, and the monumental performances - including what are arguably career-best turns from Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell - send it soaring even higher.

It's a shame that the film faced an exceptionally stupid controversy over the fact that the film dared to give Rockwell's character, initially a racist cop, a redemption arc and treat him as a multi-layered human instead of a two-dimensional villain, but Three Billboards remains a great film that had deservedly maintained a spot on the IMDb Top 250.
