30 Greatest Star Wars Characters

20. Mace Windu

Mace Windu, quite like Qui-Gon and Dooku, is another one of those Prequel Trilogy characters who didn't get nearly enough development onscreen. Instead, most of what made Windu so great (apart from the obvious, being he was played by Samuel L. Jackson and all), came in the expanded canon.

In the original Clone Wars series it was revealed that Windu was the one who crushed General Grievous' chest and gave him that chronic cough. That event was later ret-conned, but it sparked an interest in the character that is yet to subside, with multiple books, comics and animated appearances having released since 2005's Revenge of the Sith, all cementing the character as among the most pivotal of the Clone War era.

Of course, it's impossible not to mention Windu's iconic purple lightsaber when discussing the character. It's one of the coolest looking ones in the galaxy, and came about purely from Jackson insisting it should exist.
