It's time to talk about another bereaved horror character. As pretty much anyone can attest to, bereavement is a devastating, life-shattering event. Some horror movie characters go through bereavements so severe that, were these characters in a different kind of movie, they could easily headline a tear-jerking melodrama.

To name just one of the saddest examples, take Laura Baxter (Julie Christie, superb) from 1973's horror masterpiece Don't Look Now, who undergoes a hellish double-bereavement. In the film's harrowing opening scene, she and her husband John (Donald Sutherland) lose their young daughter Christine, who drowns in a pond on their estate.

And then, while the couple is in Venice renovating a church, Laura also loses John, who is killed by a mysterious serial killer that he mistakes for the spirit of their young daughter. This was a cruel turn of events, to put it mildly, and it's highly unlikely that Laura - or the couple's young son, who is at boarding school back in England throughout the movie's events - would've ever gotten over it.
