6. Battle Of The Sexes

Fox Searchlight Pictures

Release Date: September 22nd

Billed As:

Emma Stone takes on legendary tennis player Billie Jean King, who played Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) in an infamous tennis match in 1973, which could have provided ample opportunity for laughs, but which actually forms the backdrop to a film about empowerment through self-discovery.

Hype:

The story here is great - and delightfully pertinent given the ongoing battle of the sexes - but the chief drawing point is Stone's performance as King, according to the reviews out of Telluride.

The match is obviously a big part of the story, but it's a lot more than that, and it's no flippant comedy despite the cast: it's a story of discovery, produced from the minds behind Little Miss Sunshine and Slumdog Millionaire, and there's already Oscar-buzz around Stone.

On top of that, Steve Carell's transformation from comedy side-kick to brilliant dramatic actor continues, which is always a huge bonus.
