Earlier versions of Batman featured the presence of Dick Grayson aka Robin, who would be introduced as part of his family circus troupe, The Flying Graysons.

The Joker would kill Grayson's parents during a trapeze performance, and he would don the iconic Robin costume by the end of the movie.

Kiefer Sutherland, Michael J. Fox and Eddie Murphy were all considered for the part at various stages, but it was ultimately nixed from the script during subsequent drafts.

And back in November 2017, Ben Affleck confirmed that he and Matt Damon both auditioned for the role before it was cut.

Thankfully Warner Bros. charitably included a storyboard rendition of the sequence on the Batman DVD, with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill even lending their voices to Batman and The Joker respectively.
