30 Things You Didn't Know About Tim Burton's Batman
23. Adam West Wanted To Play Batman...At 60 Years Of Age
The late Adam West will forever be beloved by Batman fans for his campy rendition of the Dark Knight in the 1960s TV show and movie, yet West admitted following the release of Burton's film that he was disappointed not to be asked to reprise the iconic role.
In the early planning stages, Burton did hope to offer roles to both West and co-star Julie Newmar to play Thomas and Martha Wayne in a flashback, with their deaths effectively symbolising a passing of the torch from one Batman era to another.
However, this scene was scrapped during a re-draft of the script, and West later commented that he would've turned the part down anyway were it offered to him.
As ridiculously optimistic as West's expectation was, there's definitely part of all of us that would've loved to see West's campy Caped Crusader juxtaposed against Burton's neo-gothic aesthetic.
