30 Things You Didn't Know About Tim Burton's Batman

Tom Mankiewicz's 1980 script for the movie featured not only The Joker as an antagonist but also The Penguin, with Warner Bros. expressing interest in casting either John Candy or Peter O'Toole in the role - polar acting opposites if they ever existed.

Back when Steven Spielberg briefly flirted with the idea of making a Batman movie, he liked Dustin Hoffman for The Penguin, and when Richard Donner was in talks, he fancied Joe Pesci.

Of course, none of these casting picks came to fruition, and Oswald Cobblepot was slung from the movie when Burton threw out Mankiewicz's script.

But thankfully, the character ended up the focal antagonist in Burton's sequel Batman Returns, played with grotesque brilliance by Danny DeVito.
