Back when Superman director Richard Donner was being approached to direct, he fancied his Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson for the role of Batman, and even once Donner moved on from the project, Warner Bros. kept coming back to Gibson as their first choice.

And though the part was eventually offered to Gibson, he was ultimately forced to turn it down as shooting dates conflicted with those of Lethal Weapon 2, which ironically ended up being directed by Donner.

Gibson was also later considered to play Two-Face in Batman Forever, and between his chiselled chin and signature intensity, it's easy to see how he could've knocked both roles out of the park.
