16. Master

Though it premiered to predominantly positive reviews out of Sundance, Mariama Diallo's chilling debut Master has rather flown under the radar since hitting streaming back in March.

This psychological horror offers up a brutal skewing of the institutional racism that persists in elite American colleges to this very day, as three Black women attempt to navigate traumas both historic and anew while studying and working at a New England university.

Regina Hall gives a typically remarkable performance as Ancaster College's new head Gail Bishop, in a slow-burn horror that eschews excessive gore in favour of something more simmering and thoughtful.

Spiced with surprises and retaining its cynical edge to the very end, Master needs to be talked about more.

Master is out now on Amazon Prime Video.
