31 Horror Movies You Must Watch This October 2022
12. Orphan: First Kill
On paper, a 13-years-later prequel to 2009's campy horror hit Orphan sounded like a terrible idea, and yet, Orphan: First Kill proved the tremendous virtue of a movie that doesn't take itself one iota too seriously.
Gloriously silly enough that it's earned comparisons to last year's mesmeric Malignant, First Kill may not be a "necessary" prequel, but offers just enough of a twisted spin on the first film's formula to be more-or-less worthwhile.
The back-and-forth between Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) and her new "mother" Tricia (Julia Stiles) is a whole lot of fun, and David Coggeshall's script has a couple of dementedly entertaining plot twists up its sleeve. It ain't high art, but would you honestly want it to be?
Orphan: First Kill is out now.
