31 Scariest Movie Moments Of All Time

20. Jaw-Dropping - Mirrors

Mirrors Amy Smart
20th Century Fox

Sometimes, a scare is as simple as watching a mirror demon version of Amy Smart tear her own face in half while she tries to enjoy a nice relaxing bath.

Mirrors took the idea introduced in Poltergeist that a mirror could be used as a window into a dark, horrific world where your face can literally just fall off at any moment. If it's not peeling the flesh off, it's literally ripping it in half.

It also added a greater element of vulnerability, robbing Smart of her clothes and attacking her completely unawares, and the effect is far greater than the rest of the mostly mediocre film.

The sight of the reflection ghost ripping off her lower jaw determinedly and with tangible malice as nice-Smart thrashes around like Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls is like not being able to look away from a particularly nasty train wreck. And there's absolutely no question of looking away, either.

Try forgetting that one.
