31 Scariest Movie Moments Of All Time
17. The Monster - The Thing
Who says you have to have top level budgets and cutting edge special effects to make everyone lose their sh*t in a horror movie? It's a fallacy that micro-budget horrors have poked holes in for years, but even older movies like The Thing - which in truth has aged as gracefully as Randy Quaid - prove you can still be creeped out by patchy practical effects.
The Thing gets its reputation as a standard bearer of the genre thanks to its gnawing sense of doom, its irresistible almost whodunnit-like hook and its delicious ending, but it also scores lots of points for proper, old fashioned, in your face monster gore.
Starting with the caved in chest and the chomped-off arms, this iconic scene is a nightmarish escalation of operatic proportions. It's gruesome, it's wild and despite how alien it is, the biomechanical monstrosity taps in to every innate human body horror fear there is. What could be more human, after all, than the idea of something heinous living inside you? Particularly when it bears more than a passing resemblance to the demon offspring of Donald Trump.
