In a time when horror movies were struggling badly for innovation or creativity, Neil Marshall's The Descent took a simple idea - the eternal fear of dark holes - and managed some vividly memorable scary moments. It's claustrophobic, creepy and the monsters actually work even if they're not entirely necessary.

The best of the bunch comes the first time the monstrous goblin - or whatever it actually is - appears out of the darkness. The group of vulnerable, broken girls are understandably freaking out at the sight of a pile of animal bones when one of them idiotically breaks the single most important rule of horror movies: never draw attention to yourself.

Then the night vision camera they handily have with them swings around to see the monster standing casually behind them, turning the up the New Trousers Needed gauge immediately to 11.
