31 Scariest Movie Moments Of All Time

13. Sloth Wakes Up - Se7en

Sloth Seven
Warner Bros.

David Fincher's Se7en was a masterful exercise in gross-out cinema mashed with incredibly intelligent story-telling: it could have been a glorified CSI episode but thanks to a stunning cast, an irresistible, haunting script and some memorable flash-point moments (WHAT'S IN THE BOOOXXXX?!), it's rightly considered one of the greatest ever procedural thrillers ever made.

It mostly trades on atmosphere and emotion, building tension as Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman try to unravel Kevin Spacey's genius sin-based plot, but it also includes a wonderfully grim jump shock when the pair uncover one of John Doe's victims.

The entire Sloth sequence is... minging, for want of a better word, with Fincher messing with the audience gleefully, using horror movie audio quirks to unsettle and paying way too much attention to the ravaged body of the Sloth guy. And then, just as a cop leans in to whisper to the supposed dead man, he coughs and everyone seeks clean underwear. It's a cheap shot in an otherwise carefully crafted movie, but that doesn't mean it isn't very, very effective.
