14. The Spider Walk - The Exorcist

The Exorcist has a catalogue of scary scenes, from jump scares to the general, building sense of doom, but even the sights of a young girl masturbating with a crucifix, or spewing vivid green pea soup and spinning her head round compete with this.

The sight of young Regan spider walking like some sort of demon animal down the stairs is still one of the most jarring horror scenes ever made, even if it robs the build up of some impact. It's the perfect expression of her being broken, and being a puppet.

Luckily, director William Friedkin in his infinite wisdom cut it from the original theatrical version of the film, because it created a double climax for the scene. Unfortunately, someone else then put it back in later to ruin a whole new generation's sleep patterns.
