There's a good chance you won't have seen Biutiful, but you should. It's the film Alejandro González Iñárritu made before he sold out and started making superhero and bear fighting movies and it's magnificently haunting.

Javier Bardem stars as a people trafficker with fatal cancer who can also see ghosts and is paid to pass on messages from them, and we watch as his life spirals out of control towards his own death. Mostly, the ghost scenes are played quite gently - the ghosts are there simply to pass things on before moving off, and he's a mediator.

But then Uxbal accidentally kills a warehouse full of illegal Chinese immigrants thanks to carbon monoxide poisoning, and finds the scene of their death is haunted by at least one tormented soul. It's a very brief scene, but Inarritu's masterful flair for atmosphere makes it feel almost endless.
