32 WTF Moments From The Oscars 2016

5. Sam Smith Wins An Oscar

The night's next big shock came when Sam Smith somehow won an Oscar for his Spectre song Writing's on the Wall, upsetting the widely-expected winner Lady Gaga. Things got more awkward when Smith took to the stage and, after reading an article written by Ian McKellen, believed himself to be the first openly gay man to win an Oscar...which flatly isn't true (McKellen presumably was referring to the acting branch and Smith misread this). Though many shook this off as harmless ignorance on Smith's part, Oscar-winning (and openly gay) Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black took to Twitter to criticise Smith for his gaffe.

4. Ali G Presents With Olivia Wilde

Sacha Baron Cohen and Olivia Wilde hit the stage to show off clips from Room and Brooklyn, only for Cohen to emerge dressed as his legendary comic creation Ali G. He refers to himself as a "token black presenter", before mentioning that many people of colour have been snubbed for Oscars, including the Minions, "Eye-dris Elbow" and "the amazing black bloke from Star Wars...Darth Vader." He then refers to Room as "a movie about a room full of white people", and says to Wilde, "You is well fit" as the Brooklyn clip begins to play, to which she gives Ali a curt thank you.
