1. Spotlight Is "Weakest" Best Picture Winner Since 1953
The show ended with one final surprise, as despite winning only one prior Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Spotlight scooped up the Best Picture Oscar over other favourites The Revenant and The Big Short. Though Spotlight was a major favourite earlier on in the Oscar season, its favour began to fall by the wayside with increasing precursor victories for the other two favourites, but it's likely that the preferential balloting system hurt the divisive The Revenant, and allowed the widely-liked movie about child abuse within the church to steal the win. Still, picking up just two Oscars in total makes it the "weakest" Best Picture winner since 1953, where The Greatest Show on Earth won just Best Picture and Best Story.
