1. Max's Wife & Son Are Murdered (Mad Max)

The most horrifying and defining scene in any Mad Max movie is the one which set Max on his loner's path: when Toecutter runs over Jessie and Sprog, symbolised by the wonderfully iconic shot in which a shoe and child's ball are seen flying past the screen. At the hospital, it's confirmed that Sprog died on arrival, but Jessie's fate is left a little more ambiguous, as the doctors don't explicitly say that she's dying. Still, it's easy to infer that this happened given Max's subsequent path in life and the fact that surviving major surgery isn't easy when where you live is about to become a wasteland.
