40 Movies That Will Kick-Ass In 2018
19. Mary Poppins Returns
In this time of Disney live action remakes, it's quietly splendid that we're getting a Mary Poppins sequel rather than a redo. There's no justification for remaking the classic musical (aside from the pressing need to redub Dick Van Dyke with an accent that doesn't cause ear bleeds), and returning the magical nanny to the Banks family further down the timeline is a far better progression.
Obviously Smily Blunt will have her work cut out for her stepping into Julia Roberts' shoes - particularly when it comes to the singing requirement - but she's certainly charming enough to carry it, and having her play opposite Lin-Manuel Miranda is inspired, particularly as he's doing the new songs too.
Expect it to start sadly, as a family tragedy draws the now-grown Banks children and Poppins back to their family home. So death, in other words. But it'll no doubt brighten up after that.
