2. Bruce Willis
No sniggering at the back, please. Obviously, I'm not thinking of the smirking knucklehead of recent Die Hard sequels, nor the wretched attempts at emoting in more serious roles like The Sixth Sense. He has also had mixed results in sci-fi and comic adaptations, Looper being a decent performance, RED being woeful. Instead, take as your starting point Willis' portrayal of cop John Hartigan in Sin City. This, in my opinion, was probably Willis' finest ever performance. Layered and believable, he managed to get to the depths of Hartigan's character in the graphic novels and explore the self-loathing and disgust at the world around him which drove the character. Embittered and principled, honest and prepared to sacrifice himself for the greater good, Willis delivered his most interesting character since Butch in Pulp Fiction as a timely reminder that, given the right material, he was always a finer actor than he is often given credit for. The perfect requirements for playing an aging Batman, basically.
