1. Killer Joe
I can see question marks forming over heads out there. This is the summer movie season, how is the number one film on your list a nihilistic and violent NC-17 film that hardly anyone has seen or will ever see? Well, to be frank, because Killer Joe is the best film that has been released in the season ranging from April to August. William Friedkin's return to form is a brutal and hypnotizing look at some of the dirtiest, grungiest societal bugs ever put on screen. A rogue's gallery of white trash, all scheming against one another while Matthew McConaughey's Killer Joe holds the strings. A father and son plan on killing their drug-addled mother in order to collect on the life insurance. They hire Joe, a Dallas detective who moonlights as a contract killer and is a certifiable psychopath to boot. And that is the tip of the iceberg as far as the plot. The brutal film, wonderfully directed by Friedkin and full of great performances from Thomas Haden Church, Emile Hirsch, Gina Gershon, and McConaughey (again), it is the performance of young Juno Temple that steals the show. This is one you may have to wait to see at home, but I suggest you seek it out. That is, if you have the stomach for the fight.
