1. Kyle & Amanda (Kyle XY)
Kyle XY was a brilliant series. Dont remember much of it? Thats most likely because it was cancelled after just three seasons, which I recently rewatched on DVD. I must say, while it was airing I dismissed it as the poor mans Smallville, upon full viewing I was pleasantly surprised. It really was a great show in its own right. One of its most frustrating aspects, however, was the relationship between Kyle a genetically altered clone with superpowers and Amanda, the literal girl next door who plays a mean piano. For one thing, they really didnt have much chemistry. Secondly, around season two we meet Jessie, who is pretty much a girl version of Kyle, with her own powers and abilities. The sparks between these two are much more profound (read, they exist), yet Kyle for reasons that are never really explored continues to choose Amanda over Jessie. Which of course would make sense, if Kyle and Amanda actually seemed to like one another. But it doesnt seem that way. Like, at all. Whats more, fate appears to be firmly set on keeping the two apart. In season one, Amanda has a boyfriend, which by season two is over with, but then, in comes Jessie, who by season three has drummed up so much of Amandas jealousy (not helped by the increasingly compromising situations she and Kyle get caught in) that she actually calls it quits with Kyle. Yet, instead of Amanda and Kyle coming off as star-crossed lovers fighting desperately for the one they care about, it just becomes one of those dude, youre obsessing over the wrong girl scenarios, and by the shows end I was hoping hed get a clue and move on already.
How It Ends: As previously noted, Kyle XY was cancelled before its time. Yet, the show-runners created a documentary entitled Future Revealed to wrap up some of the loose ends. Upon watching, I learned that Kyle, in fact was eventually supposed to end up with Jessie, but that in the end, hed basically be alone because of the whole I'm-a-superhero thing. So, theres that, I guess. Well, that was bleak. Gives one a bad outlook on love, no? Yeah, well lets move right into the five best romances now.
