5 Film Albinos (and Everything That's Wrong With Them)

4. Bosie - Cold Mountain (Charlie Hunnam)

Based on the novel by Charles Frazier, Cold Mountain (2003) tells the story of a wounded confederate soldier who deserts his army during the American civil war to return to his true love. The major villain of the piece is Bosie, a violent albino played by Charlie Hunnam. A vicious psychopath (in one scene he lynches a woman until she becomes mute), Bosie spends the bulk of the film trying to off Jude Law so that he can€™t reunite with Nicole Kidman. Hunnam claims to have extensively researched albinism prior to filming, stating in an interview that €œI read that the condition was often a product of incest... Also, I read that albinos generally have about 60/20 vision and are susceptible to nosebleeds." But Wait... Cold Mountain won praise from scholars such as John Inscoe for its historical accuracy, giving a realistic portrayal of the bleak living conditions that people faced during the American civil war. Unfortunately, Charlie Hunnam€™s research seemed to consist of watching the Historical Channel while flicking over to SyFy or Fox News whenever someone was using too many big words. The idea that albinism results from inbreeding is one of the largest myths surrounding the condition. While there was a case of an albino gorilla in Barcelona Zoo called Snowflake (naturally) being found to have been inbred, his albinism was due to the fact that both his parents carried the rare and recessive albino gene, rather than God smiting the ape for his parents pretending they were characters on Game Of Thrones.
