5 Films That Deserve Sequels And 5 That Deserve Remakes
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey - Sequel
Right ok, bare with me here. I am well aware that Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi epic is a seminal piece of cinema and one of the greatest films ever made. There are many people, who think it should never be touched, and a large part of me agrees with them.
But, the ending to 2001 also leaves a lot of room for interpretation and leaves so many questions unanswered. 2001 is therefore begging for a sequel so fans can gain some answers and some sort of finality.
Developing a suitable sequel may also, not be as difficult as you might think, as there is a solid foundation on which sequels can be based.
Indeed, Kubrick’s film was made in conjunction with Arthur C. Clarke’s novel of the same name. But, as well as 2001, Clarke also wrote three additional books; 2010: Odyssey Two, 2061: Odyssey Three and 3001: The Final Odyssey.
Therefore, considering how closely Kubrick and Clarke worked together, any sequel adapted from these additional novels, would likely be in line with Kubrick’s vision.
The issue then, is whether such a sequel can be done right, but it's definitely possible. You only have to look at Blade Runner 2049 and Doctor Sleep, (a genuine sequel to another Kubrick classic) to see that, if handled correctly, a long-awaited sequel can more than live up to the original.
Ultimately, a sequel to 2001 could be utterly spectacular and see a whole new generation fall in love with Kubrick’s masterpiece.
