3. Genre
Westerns are surprisingly well received the world over as evidenced Hell on Wheels' popularity and the return of Deadwood to television it is clear that people want to see these kinds of stories told. Roland, who dresses like a classic cowboy, is referred to as the gunslinger more often than not and the town environs give off of a Wild West vibe; plenty of opportunity to exploit these elements to bring in fans of the western genre. Being Stephen King's magnum opus however it isn't only the western that is explored, there is plenty here for fantasy fans to get a kick out of with the supernatural featuring heavily throughout the plot. We are frequently reminded that this world is populated by ghosts and demons as well as people drawing on the occult imagery to both frighten and intrigue. Although I have mentioned it previously, Game of Thrones is a great example of epic fantasy adapting well; drawing in a mainstream audience to a previously niche genre. For those of you who have read the books you will be aware that these are far from the only two genres King plays with, however I believe them to be the most crucial for a successful adaptation.
