3. Jennifer Lawrence - House At The End of the Street
Jennifer Lawrence had a great 2012, mostly due to the volume strategy I mentioned earlier. She's now the lead in The Hunger Games franchise and she's getting Oscar buzz for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook. Yet for all the success she's enjoyed with these films, she's probably wishing she had just said no to a September released film that crashed and burned at the box office. House at the End of the Street sees Lawrence's character and her mother move into a new house in a rural town. Cue generic story about a creepy kid murdering her parents and leaving her brother to survive. Of course the brother, despite being weird and elusive, becomes Lawrence's romantic interest and creepy things start happening. Lawrence then fades into the stereotype of being the dumb girl who continually puts herself in danger. It's usually hard for PG-13 horror movies to be good, with severe limitations on how gory and scary they can be. House at the End of the Street has all these failures and it also has the problem of taking itself way too seriously. No amount of Jennifer Lawrence or even a crazy twist at the end of the film can save this mess. Lawrence gave it her best shot though and looking at her filmography, you see an actress who is almost exclusively critically acclaimed movies. With new Hunger Games and X-Men movies on the way, House is one film that will be forgotten very quickly.
