5 Heroic Characters From War Movies You Can Only Dream Of Being

1. Captain John H. Miller (Saving Private Ryan)

Saving Private Ryan In Saving Private Ryan, we have one of the most iconic and famous war films there has ever been. And in its main character, Captain John H. Miller, played brilliantly by Tom Hanks, we have a man who despite claiming that he is simply following orders in going to find and bring home Private Ryan after his three brothers were killed in combat, it soon becomes clear that he is war hero, who through huge endeavour eventually succeeds in bringing Ryan home. What makes this character so heroic is not only the fact that he traipses across occupied France with a small group of men to look for Ryan, but also that he does it without question, not just out of a feeling of having to, but because he wanted to get him home to comfort his bereaved mother. That's not to say he doesn't doubt the mission, but the rationale soon becomes clear when he finds him safe and sound, or as safe and sound as you can be defending a vital bridge against the Wermacht. Another thing going for Miller in the sense of being someone other people would love to be is that he gets to shoot Germans and even a tank with a pistol, although the allied aircraft flying overhead may have had more to do with it. Factoring in these points, Miller quickly becomes someone that movies are made of, which is ironic, but a man who did all this after having survived D-Day is worth a lot of consideration in this list. Think we've missed anyone out? Tell us who you would have included.
