2. Panic Room (2002)

Panic RoomBudget: $48,000,000 Gross (Adjusted For Inflation): $248,564,515 This 2002 American thriller features a mother and daughter, Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart, whose new home is invaded by burglars. Their 4,000 square foot brownstone in New York City comes built with a "panic room," which is a safe room of sorts, equipped with a phone and surveillance cameras. Burglars, played by Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, and Dwight Yoakam, want something in the panic room and won't leave until they get it. Originally casted to play the mother and daughter characters were Nicole Kidman and Hayden Panetierre. After they left the project, with Foster and Stewart re-casted, the mother's character was rewritten from being weak, to a strong female figure whose personality more matched her daughter's. In the United States, the movie grossed $30 million in its opening weekend.
