1. Home Alone (1990)
Budget: $17,000,000
Gross (Adjusted For Inflation): $824,678,472 The setting for this family comedy involves making light of what would be a very dark situation in reality. A wealthy family leaves for their flight to Paris over the Christmas holiday, not realizing they left their eight-year-old son, Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), home alone by accident. Two burglars, played by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci, case the family's house before they leave for Paris, find out what time they're leaving, and ask about their home security system, all while impersonating police officers. What the burglars don't expect is someone to be home when they try to break-in. Kevin, being a rebellious and clever young man, protects his home from the men with a serious of devious booby traps. Hi-jinks and hilarity ensure. So what is it about home invasion movies that make them so popular? Presumably it has something to do with the fact that they play on a major and somewhat fundamental fear that we all have: to have your personal, private space be intruded and then your family subjected to violence is probably one of the worst things people can think of. Stick to the movies, and protect your home while you're in them and away.
