4. Peter & Paul The Confederate Artillery Pieces (The Horse Soldiers)

horse-soldiers The last cavalry picture collaboration between legendary actor John Wayne and director John Ford, The Horse Soldiers is a movie about Wayne's Colonel John Marlowe leading a Sherman-style cavalry raid deep into Confederate territory in order to lay waste to a railroad and supply depot at Newton Station, a vital railway junction supplying the rebel garrison at Vicksburg. Marlowe is forced to take two women with him on the mission, complicating matters somewhat, because they overheard him discussing his plans for the mission and need to be monitored at all times. He also has to continually contend with Colonel Phil Secord who persistently doubts Marlowe's orders and command decisions. Of course, typical John Wayne style brawling and shoot-outs ensue, but he completes his mission - this is in spite of the fact that the Confederates uses some very heavy artillery, which they have named 'Peter' and 'Paul'.
