3. Charlene The Rifle (Full Metal Jacket)

vincent Leonard "Private Pyle" Lawrence is an overweight, dim-witted Marine cadet and Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is his Senior Drill Instructor. Hartman employs draconian tactics to turn his recruits into hardened Marines who are prepared for combat and it is him who gives Lawrence his nickname after taking something of a disliking to him almost immediately. Pyle doesn't improve, despite Hartman's discipline, so he is paired with another cadet - Private Joker. However, Hartman finds a jelly donut hidden amongst Pyle's things and immediately issues a punishment to every other cadet for not pushing Pyle to do better. The punishment is that every time Pyle messes up, everyone excluding Pyle will be punished. This prompts the other cadets into wrapping Pyle in a blanket and beating him with bars of soap which, in turn, sends Pyle spiralling into a dangerous state of mental instability. He does improve in terms of his performance however, impressing even Hartman with his shooting accuracy and dedication: Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: What's this weapon's name, Private Pyle? Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, the private's weapon's name is 'Charlene', sir! Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Private Pyle, you are definitely born again hard! Hell, I may even allow you to serve as a rifleman in my beloved Corps. Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, yes, sir! However, Pyle would continue to deteriote, and would ultimately use 'Charlene' to kill both Hartman and himself.
