5 Johnny Depp Movies To Watch Instead Of The Lone Ranger

5. The Ninth Gate - 1999the ninth gate1 From the controversial director Roman Polanski comes this little gem. I must state that straight out, this is not for everyone. Most would use this slot for Fear and Loathing, I however had to include this esoteric and creepy film, as it is one of the most unique performance of Depp's career. This slow burning and sometimes meandering film strips back the overacting elements that Depp is known for and highlights his real acting chops. The plot is simple enough: An authority on rare books Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) makes his living tracking down valuable items for rich bibliophiles. Corso is hired by an occult enthusiast Boris Balkan to validate his copy of "The Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows" a.k.a. a 17th century book rumoured to be co-written by Satan. Depp embarks to find and examine all three books to determine if they are forgeries, this leads to clashes with Satanic loyalists and other collectors in a number of beautiful locations around Europe. What could have failed epically is actually an entertaining psychological thriller. I cannot recommend it enough; it also makes a nice double feature with Eyes Wide Shut.
