5 Kaiju We DEFINITELY Won't See In Godzilla's Monsterverse

2. Gamera

Mechagodzilla Toho
Kadokawa Daiei Studio

Of all the monsters on this list, perhaps none stands as tall as Gamera, figuratively speaking. Gamera, the Giant Monster has anchored his own franchise for over five decades across film, television, comics and video games.

Making his first appearance in 1965, Gamera is one of Godzilla's oldest rivals. What makes this rivalry unique, however, is that Gamera has never shared the screen with Godzilla or any other Toho creation. This is a rivalry between studios.

Gamera is the property of Kadokawa Daiei Studios, which absorbed the properties of the now defunct Daiei films. Daiei first created Gamera as the studio's competitor to Godzilla and his accompanying monsters.

Legendary does not have any licensing rights to any of the Kadokawa properties, making a matchup with Godzilla and, by extension, Kong and other Toho kaiju legally impossible. There is clearly an audience for a hypothetical crossover grudge match between Godzilla and his studio rival, but you have to assume there is a practical reason as to why it hasn't happened already.

There was seemingly an opportunity for a battle between the two classic monsters. Toho and Daiei partnered for Gamera's Heisei trilogy in the 90's, with Daiei handling production and Toho managing Distribution. If the matchup didn't happen then, when a crossover could've helped boost a struggling Daiei, then you have to wonder when it will happen, or if ever.
