5 More Awful Films That Are Actually Really Good

3. The Village

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know what you're thinking: all of M. Night Shyamalan's films after Signs really can't be defended in any way and I agree with you on every count except for The Village. In my opinion The Village is the most well made of Shyamalan's films and features the best performances ever given for him: Joaquin Phoenix offers a great performance that would be praised if it wasn't in a Shyamalan movie while the rest of the cast is equally as stellar. There's Bryce Dallas Howard, Adrian Brody, William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver all giving performances that could make any film, at the very least, watchable while they really elevate The Village above all of Shyamalan's other films. The Village is the only film in which Shyamalan actually is able to create the appropriate atmosphere of fear and tension that he's tried to do in just about everything he's ever made and even if the twist at the end is a little ridiculous it still doesn't stop the rest of the film from being much better than everyone says it is.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
