4. John Rhys-Davies As Gimli (Lord Of The Rings)
The character of Gimli appears in perhaps the most iconic fantasy yarn of all time - The Lord of the Rings. In the Peter Jackson film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic opus Gimli is in fact portrayed by the six foot one inch tall John Rhys-Davies but with the magic of modern film making is made to appear much smaller. Rhys-Davies brash interpretation of the character is perfect in every way and creates for us the living embodiment of the typical grumpy Dwarf Warrior that we have become familiar with throughout the fantasy genre. He is the complete opposite of the more reserved Legolas and Aragorn characters and offers a suitable comic relief in a film that is at times too deep in mythology. With his lethal axes Gimli is a diminutive powerhouse - everything that a Hobbit is not - that isn't going to take sh*t off of anybody, however whether or not he ever showed his oversized helmet (cheeky) to the Elf-lady Galadriel remains unknown. He did take quite a shine to her though.
