5. The Other Mother's Hand (Coraline, 2009)
I can't think of a single hand in all the years of cinema that strikes fear into an audiences hearts more than the Other Mother's skeletal claw like appendage in the fantastic animated fantasy Coraline. Sure you can argue that the hand isn't real but that's not the point. For a few moments at the end of the movie that hand is the focal point of the entire story and is the one thing that stands between Coraline's real life and her pseudo existence in the other realm. With it's metallic looking digits and it's spider like movements it is utterly horrifying to see and the very idea of that crawling up onto your bed to throttle you in the night is enough to make many a child - and adult come to think of it - sleep with the lights on. The Other Mother's monstrous hand is the kiddie friendly (and we use that term very loosely) version of the Face Hugger from the Alien movies and if that doesn't scare you then you're more of a man than I.
