4. Star Trek: Into Darkness
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeLp2qr2iCg J.J. Abrams rebooted the Star Trek franchise in 2009 and, for somebody who was never interested in the original Star Trek, it was an absolutely fantastic film. It introduced the universe to us in an easy to digest way, it was filled with great dialogue and did a brilliant job of establishing a whole crew of characters to us within a single film. The ending of the film set it up perfectly for a sequel and thankfully, Abrams has delivered. This time round, the brilliant star of Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch, is the villain of which we know almost nothing about, except that he says pretty bad ass things like "You think your world is safe... it is an illusion" and that he's going to blow a lot of things up. Both of which are a great combination for a villain. There was a lot of speculation that he was going to be Khan, although it has been announced that his character is called John Harrison. It sounds like a bit of a simple name so it could be a cover to keep the real identity secret, but who knows? The trailer is just brilliant, there's nothing to fault. Extremely good lines of dialogue voicing over good action, there's good music, no major plot points given away, this could well be one of my favourite films of the year. Abrams has recently signed on for the next films of the Star Wars series and if he does with that what he did with Star Trek, I could find myself loving another space franchise.
