3. Unbreakable 2
Why We Need It: One couldnt exactly blame you if youve never seen Unbreakable. Its one of those films that sort of flew under the radar for a lot of people, though since its release its become something of a cult classic. Having said that, if you havent seen it, please, see it. If youre a fan of the superhero genre, this is required viewing. Also, spoilers ahead. Sort of. Unbreakable is the story of David Dunn (Bruce Willis), a man who is indestructible, and who develops a sort of sixth sense (get it?) in that he can sense the immoral actions of others. He is discovered and goaded to use his powers by Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), a comic-book aficionado at the polar end of the spectrum in that hes got extreme brittle bones. Like, seriously brittle. They call him Mr. Glass. Its essentially your run of the mill superhero origin story, but what makes Unbreakable so unique is its ultra-realistic, stripped down take on a story model most of us can recite from memory. There are few if any big effects, there are no real costumes, and yet it captures the essence of a classic comic book tale perfectly. And with a twist ending (M. Night Shyamalan did write and direct, after all), the film closes leaving audiences wanting more. Which is a real shame.
Why We Wont Get It: Soon after its release in 2000, there was a rumor (that yours truly believed at the time as well) that Unbreakable had been written to be the first in a trilogy. Shyamalan has since
denied this was ever the case, but since then the idea of a sequel has been brought up on more than one occasion. Yet, as of right now, while Willis, Jackson, and
Shyamalan have all expressed their hope that it will happen, production on a sequel has yet to be set.
