1. V/H/S
Many people believe the found footage gimmick has been done to the hilt, however the likes of Troll Hunter have proved that the style can still create a great movie, if done right. Since the Blair Witch Project, which created a genuinely atmospheric experience, there have been some decent found footage movies and some not so great, but as far as they go V/H/S could rank as one of the best. It has been a long time since anyone put a film together that assaults the senses in the tradition of the best video nasties of years gone by, but V/H/S does that and does it without any kind of apology. This is heavy violence, blood, gore and sex. A full on reminder that horror is meant to be horrific. Not every moment will be appreciated by everyone but it is safe to say that there is something in here that will make anyone look over their shoulder to check they are not about to be slaughtered in their own homes. Some will say that the anthology contained here strips away much of the story in favour of delivering the horror more or less from the off. With the basic principle being that each story is played on a video tape that has been recorded by the characters in them on a video camera, it takes away those drawn out introductions that usually leave little room for anything horrific. V/H/S does not come close to making that mistake. It is strong, it is disturbing, but it is horror.
