5 Movies To Restore Faith In The Horror Genre

Halloween is the time of year that has come to be loved and loathed in equal measure by filmgoers looking for those dark night chills and cling-to-each-other-in-the-back-row moments as with every good horror film released €“ Ringu, Poltergeist, Alien €“ there is a spate of the bad and ugly ones €“ Alien Vs Predator, The Wicker Man (Remake), Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Friday 13th Parts 4 thru 8. Back in the 1990s when I watched my first horror movies, I was hooked by many such as Alien, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday 13th, but none of them ever seemed scary. These films, and many others had some of the coolest and most interesting villains of cinema and although they were not pretty to look at, they were not the stuff of my nightmares. The problem with the horror genre is its popularity. Everyone likes to be scared by either a film, so when one does come along that gets lots of people talking, it is not long before any number of annual sequels have been churned out and the original movie is tarnished by the arrival of its successors €“ with the odd notable exception along the way. In the last 30 years we€™ve seen Freddy and Jason go from fresh terrors to celebrity status icons, Aliens and Predators leave their respective movies to join together in two teen friendly beat €˜em ups, Saw begin with an ingeniously twisted stand-alone movie to a sprawling monstrosity with an ending everyone knew two movies before it happened, and the latest €œHalloween Guaranteed Release€ of the Paranormal Activity series. So, while there is a number of horror films out there and coming soon that are probably best to avoid, that doesn€™t mean there aren€™t plenty of scares still to come in 2012 and 2013. Here is a rundown of five of the best horror films released this year and coming soon that you may or may not have heard of.
