5 Movies-Within-Movies We NEED To See (And 5 That Would Suck)

Would you rather watch Jaws 19 or Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season?

What's better than a movie? A movie-within-a-movie, of course!

From those (in)famous fake trailers featured in Tropic Thunder, to the seriously shlocky Stab series from the Scream franchise, movies-within-movies can function as a hilarious and innovative way to self-reflexively poke fun at the film industry.

However, while some of these fake films are just for fun, there are others which we actually wish we could watch. Who wouldn't want to see Arnold Schwarzenegger as Hamlet in a cheesy, high-octane adaptation of one of Shakespeare's most famous plays?

Conversely, Jaws 19, promotional material for which we briefly see in Back to the Future Part II, looks like it would probably be a critical disaster, and we think audiences would probably give this one a miss in cinemas.

So, here are five movies-within-movies which we actually would want to see, as well as five which would likely be critical and commercial flops.

10. Amistad II from Scary Movie Would Probably Suck

Dimension Films

This spoof horror film, which parodies hit horror films such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, stars Anna Faris, Marlon Wayans, and Regina Hall as a group of teenagers who are stalked by a masked serial killer.

In a parody of Scream 2's terrifying opening scene, Ray (Shawn Wayans) and Brenda (Hall), go to the cinema to see a screening of the historical romance Shakespeare in Love. While watching the film, the imperiled pair are eventually killed off by the masked murder.

Before their gruesome (and, honestly, pretty hilarious) deaths, however, the pair see a trailer for Amistad II, a fake sequel to Amistad, the critically-acclaimed historical drama from Steven Spielberg which focuses on a mutiny aboard a slave ship.

Spielberg's original film was a deeply serious, heartfelt account of an undeniably important story, filmed with grace and respect. The fictional Amistad II, however, is an ostensibly tasteless flick which bizarrely incorporates plot points of Titanic into its narrative. While this sequel is, of course, deliberately meant to look bad, we would still skip this one at the cinema.
